“Ancient cultural legends also played a hand in inspiring a terrible dread of these celestial nomads. The Roman prophecies, the “Sibylline Oracles,” spoke of a “great conflagration from the sky, falling to earth,” while the most ancient known mythology, the Babylonian “Epic of Gilgamesh,” described fire, brimstone, and flood with the arrival of a comet. Rabbi Moses Ben Nachman, a Jew living in Spain, wrote of God taking two stars from Khima and throwing them at the earth in order to begin the great flood. Yakut legend in ancient Mongolia called comets “the daughter of the devil,” and warned of destruction, storm and frost, whenever she approaches the earth. Stories associating comets with such terrible imagery are at the base of so many cultures on Earth, and fuel a dread that followed comet sightings throughout history. ”

According to Chambers (1909), there are only a handful of comets which may be considered to be “remarkable”. The list, reproduced below, comprises only 32 comets in the past 1000 years, indicating that we might expect an exceptional comet on average only 3 times per century. These remarkable comets are noteworthy for their extended visibility (including daytime visibility), and their exceptional brightness and spectacular features, which included reddish colors, multiple tails, jets and haloes. The figure at the left shows the Great Comet of 1843 as seen from Kent, England (Chambers, 1909). Because these comets appear suddenly and are seen by a multitude of people, nobody can be claimed as the discoverer. One of the most spectacular historical comets was the Great Comet of 1811 (Flaugergues) which was observed for an unprecedented 17 months. When discovered, it was 5th magnitude and over 2 AU from the sun. The maximum tail length was estimated to be 100 million miles. This comet attracted the attention of Napoleon as presaging his invasion of Russia, yet others wondered “what misfortune does it bring?” (Chambers, 1909).

New Comets Ov Cupid Ov Cupid Album “Eko Eko Aradia” Now Available for PreOrder On Bandcamp

The new Comets Ov Cupid Album “Eko Eko Aradia” is not set for release until Jan 6 2015.

But it is available for preorder on Bandcamp now!

Eko Eko Aradia” is the 4th full length effort by Comets Ov Cupid. Inspired by the German Kosmische Music (Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze, Cluster) tradition of the seventies as well as the Maximal/Minimalists (Fripp/Eno, Glenn Branca, Earth and Sunn 0))) , the music is intended for those inclined towards space and the infinite. Recorded in rural North Dakota both outside and inside as to reflect the secluded ambience of the surroundings. This recording is unique in that it 4 pieces played in one take with little to no overdubs. Acoustic and Electric guitars are the main instruments as well as theremin and a Micro Korg on the beginning track. The cover photo is of a futuristic ruin found in his home state. Known in Fortean Folklore as the “North Dakota Illuminati Pyramid” it is a relic from the height of the cold war though many conspiracies still abound as to its real function.
